He goes into detail on a plethora of different mechanical keyboard parts. I was instantly in love. I must have spent a good few hours looking into different switches and the different types of mods you can do to improve the feeling and sound of the keyboard. What I didn’t realise was how deep this rabbit hole would lead me…

Logitech G213 Prodigy Gaming Keyboard

To give a bit of background, I had a Logitech G213 Prodigy; purchased when I just needed a reliable keyboard. I kept it in relatively good condition and it saw me through my time at university. What I didn’t realise was that it wasn’t mechanical at all; it had a membrane like sheet underneath each of the keycaps. Don’t get me wrong, it felt nice to type on but it didn’t have any sort of satisfying noise like the ones I was hearing on YouTube.

That was it. I was going to spend the time researching and then purchase my own mechanical keyboard. After countless hours looking into the board, plate, switches and keycaps, I came across one that seemed to fit the bill. I found it on Ali Express and it was reasonably cheap (compared to how expensive these kinds of keyboards can be).

Keydous NJ80-AP Wireless Mechanical Keyboard

I decided on the Keydous NJ80. It had 3 options for connectivity: wired (USB-C), bluetooth or 5Ghz wireless. This was incredible, I’ve never had any wireless peripheral prior to this and maybe it was time I joined the revolution of removing wires. I have to admit, having a clutter-free desk is one of the nicest things to experience.

The NJ80 also had a volume knob (fancy) and came with a few different coloured accent keys; the Esc, Enter and Spacebar. Once it arrived, I immediately swapped all three of these keys out for the teal-coloured keycaps.

When I ordered the keyboard, I wanted a brass plate and the TTC Ace switches. This was pretty much an educated guess as to what I would like. Turns out that the brass plate is rather nice and gives a good weight to the keyboard; making it feel really well-built and solid. The switches were also a hit, they were linear (it seemed that this was the best for the ‘thoccy’ noise I was persuing) and had a really nice feel.

C³Equalz Banana Split Switches

However, shortly after using it I realised that it wasn’t in it’s final form. The PCB was hot-swappable, allowing the user to change out the switches for any others. Before even looking at a keyboard there were a few switches that I came across time and time again and I just absolutely fell in love with the sound. These were the Aflion Tropical Waters and the C³Equalz Banana Split switches. After days of deliberation I went with the Banana Splits because the others were always out of stock and I was too eager.

A couple weeks go by and they finally arrive from the US. I was smart and also got some Krytox 205g0 lube and some switch films as I anticipated modding the switches to make them sound more thoccy. I instantly began swapping the TTC Aces out and replacing them with the Banana Splits. I was too excited to worry about modding them as I knew the modding process was long and monotonous. They sounded…. meh. Slightly disappointing seeing as I spent a decent amount on getting them shipped (had to pay a ridiculous amount in import tax and I’m still upset about that today).

So with the thought of modding them on my mind, I took the time to again research the best method of filming and lubing the switches. After a couple more weeks, the time had come to push through this long process and get it sounding just like I wanted. Now when I say it took me hours, it took me almost 9 hours on and off during the day to get them all lubed, filmed and replaced back into the keyboard. But oh my, the sound. It was like music to my ears. There was no more ‘clack’ when the key hit the bottom of the switch. There was no scratchy feeling or sound for that matter. It really does feel smooth to type on and absolutely incredible to listen to.

Teal Coiled Cable with an Aviator Connector

I’m super happy with how the keyboard sounds and feels now. I just know that I will inevitably continue to make modifications to the keyboard to chase my perception of a perfect keyboard. With that being said, I think I might upgrade the USB-C cable to one that just looks better in every way. I think I’ll continue the theme and go with a teal coloured cable with the aviator connector. I’m not too sure why ‘keebs’ (keyboard people) have this but it looks kinda cool and I’m already in too deep to quit now.

My Keydous NJ80-AP Keyboard

I look forward to hearing about your keyboard builds and what keyboard part made you finally realise that you were now a part of the ‘keeb’ community.

So recently I was scrolling YouTube and one night I came across a keyboard-related channel called “Hipyo Tech“.
